The government is a great source of valuable geospatial open access data that can be used in mapping tools. This map uses Census Bureau’s Business Dynamics Statistics to visualize job creation from start up firms.
The Pudding, working with Viacom, uses a database of several million user-submitted keywords that describe a film’s plot, including cultural themes like civil rights, religion, space etc. for the top grossing films over the last 50 years. The interface also marks select historical events related to these themes, such as the first AIDS case revealed by the CDC, lowering the drinking age or Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign. Select and theme and browse the films through the timeline.
