New Massachusetts Census Report Estimates - UMass Donahue Institute

U.S. Census Bureau released its July 1, 2012 population estimates for sub-county geographies.  These estimates take the county population totals released earlier this year and distribute them among cities and towns based on each municipality’s housing unit inventory, occupancy rate, and person-per-household rate.  As has been the trend over the last many years, most growth within Massachusetts was seen in the Northeastern and Eastern areas of the state, with population loss seen in the Western counties, especially Berkshire, as well as Barnstable County (Cape Cod) where more aged population distributions lead to a greater number of deaths than births each year.

Attached please find the UMDI Population Estimates Program’s summary of the U.S. Census release, along with Massachusetts extract tables showing percentage growth and rankings.

This report and appendices will also be posted at the State Data Center website under the News and Releases section at:  http://www.massbenchmarks.org/statedata/news.htm
